WoW Affliction Warlock Strategies For Grinding
By Cameron Bidbury | July 25, 2009
So you want to be an Affliction warlock, huh? You probably thought it would be nice and easy, just toss a couple of damage over time spells up, watch the mob’s health tick down, collect your loot and go. Imagine your surprise when your Voidwalker couldn’t hold aggro through your ridiculous damage, and when you tried to compensate by Fear-kiting, you spent as much time life-tapping and bandaging as you did fighting.
So how do you do it right? Well, unfortunately there is no magic bullet for leveling an affliction warlock, and that’s doubly true when you’re picking up new spells and talents every level or two. However, there are a few tricks that you can take on that will help you handle situations that get a bit out of control and will let you make the most of your grinding time. This guide is aimed at players at or above level 40, since that is when you will have the talents and spells necessary to truly call yourself an affliction warlock.
1. You should be using your imp, and he needs to be phased out and passive. He’s not a fireball turret anymore, his only job now is to keep you buffed and feed you mana. The only time you should have to life tap is in really rough situations.
2. Curse of Agony and Corruption are your “priority” spells. Get Curse of Agony up first since it’s your longest running DoT and gets more powerful the closer it is to finishing, and Corruption is your best scaling DoT, so it should always be up. Anything else is cake, as between those and Drain Life you should be fine for damage and healing.
3. Taking on more than one mob? Fear them, hit them with Curse of Agony, Corruption, and Siphon Life. Fighting two mobs as a warlock isn’t particularly hard. Drain tank the first one and keep the other one away using fear. With Siphon Life up, the second mob will act as an unwitting healer as well. If you think you may be in over your head, there’s always Death Coil.
4. Stat prioritization is pretty simple as an affliction lock. You want spell power, in large quantities. If you’re settling for second best, go with Stamina. It effectively adds to your mana pool, not to mention it’s life extending properties.
You made a good choice with an Affliction warlock. They are one of the fastest classes to level in World of Warcraft. They do killer damage, have no problem taking on multiple mobs, and downtime isn’t even in their vocabulary. If you follow my strategies, you’ll be 80 before you know it.
